Frequently Asked Questions

The Salkantay Trek 5 Days typically includes transportation from Cusco to the trailhead, a professional trekking guide, meals during the trek, camping equipment, accommodation according to the itinerary, and a guided visit to Machu Picchu. Some packages may also include train tickets, bus tickets, and entrance fees. Inclusions vary by tour operator, so we recommend reviewing the itinerary and services included in your package before booking.

The Salkantay Trek 5 Days is considered a challenging hike because of its high altitude, long walking days, and steep mountain trails. One of the most demanding sections is the ascent toward the Salkantay Pass, which reaches approximately 4,630 meters (15,190 feet) above sea level. Regular walking or hiking practice, proper acclimatization in Cusco, and a steady pace can help you prepare for the trek. Weather and trail conditions may also affect the difficulty.

The classic 5-day Salkantay Trek covers approximately 60 to 75 kilometers (37 to 47 miles), depending on the route and itinerary. Along the way, you can experience snow-capped mountains, the Salkantay Pass, cloud forests, and subtropical landscapes before reaching the Machu Picchu area. Daily distances vary, and some sections involve significant elevation changes. Your guide will explain the route and walking schedule before each day of hiking.

Pack sturdy hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing, a warm jacket, a waterproof jacket and trousers, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, personal toiletries, and a reusable water bottle. A small daypack is useful for carrying water, snacks, and essential items during the hike. Temperatures can vary considerably between the cold mountain pass and warmer lower-altitude areas. Check your tour operator's luggage allowance and equipment list before departure.

The best time to do the Salkantay Trek is generally during the dry season, from May to September, when rainfall is usually lower and mountain views are often clearer. June, July, and August are popular months, so booking in advance is recommended. The rainy season, particularly from December to March, can bring muddy trails, reduced visibility, and more challenging hiking conditions. Weather in the Andes can change quickly at any time of year, so appropriate clothing and preparation are essential.
